Right… How many of us get excited about toothpaste? Antibacterial handwash? Seat belts and airbags? Insurance? Not many of us. So how do I get you excited about health and safety in massage? How do I “sex up” injury prevention and get you to look after your most important working tool – YOU?! While it’s not the most exciting topic in massage today, it is definitely the most important. Let’s get the doom and gloom out of the way, then hopefully I can get you excited about the benefits of looking after Number One.
What would you do if you couldn’t work tomorrow? …
What happens to your clients for the month, and possibly beyond, if you suddenly have an accident? From anything as simple but incapacitating as breaking a bone in a hand, to serious and traumatic injury involving hands and wrists – we’ve seen it all, and it all happens when you least expect it. Over the course of a career, the vast majority of bodyworkers will most probably sustain work-related injuries of one sort or other, to say nothing of the chances of unrelated unforeseen “accidental damage”. If you are fortunate enough to have sickness cover for your bills, you may be able to make ends meet, but what happens to your client base?
Clearly, it is important to consider the unexpected. As we’re so used to insuring everything else, isn’t it time we ensure the safety of our careers? Take steps now to learn new ways of working that take your hands out of treatment and address the posture implications that go with that; you will not only increase your stroke repertoire and please your clients, but guarantee that should the worst happen, you’ll be able to press on. What’s more, learning strokes that don’t involve your hands and more actively involve the rest of your body means your physical health will improve, you will be able to massage longer in the day, the length of your massage career will grow, and you will be able to take on more clients without strain and sick days! And clients will absolutely adore the resulting nurturing, deep, and flowing treatments. Proactivity equals guaranteed productivity, so look after you; learn a new training technique, like IPM’s Injury Prevention Massage training. Not only is it fun, but also it may literally save your professional life!
